Description

Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall (1984, Best Actor, Tender Mercies) is Felix Bush, the “Hermit of Caleb County,” a man so haunted by his secrets that he has lived in quiet desolation in the Tennessee backwoods for over 40 years. Realizing that he is near his own mortality, Bush decides to have a “living funeral party,” inviting people to tell their stories about him. Enlisting the help of Frank Quinn(Golden Globe® winner Bill Murray, 2004, Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Lost in Translation) and Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black, Legion), Bush goes through a process of self-discovery, allowing him to deal with his past secrets, including ones involving old flame (and new widow) Mattie (Academy Award®winner Sissy Spacek, 1980, Best Actress, Coal Miner's Daughter).

Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Robert Duvall's acting was extremely good. Duvall WAS the character he was playing. Remaining actors were excellent in their roles. Loved the period costumes and the location. Recommend this film.
  • one of those rare small films that is what poignant independent film is all about.

first let me say, that in all of Robert Duvall's Roles, This one epitomizes a quality of him made into a character more than any other for me. He plays an older self sufficient Hermit who lives in a cabin on his own land with just his mule named Bessie, a graveyard full of past pet dogs, and a picture of his one true love for company. And The story revolves around his story of coming to terms with the large and tragic things that came to define his life and his lifestyle. And for me Duvall has always brought this feeling of being both engaged and world weary, gentle and yet ferociously driven by deeply thought about introspective reasons. And I have to say this Old hermit is the stripped down embodiment of all those characteristics. I was initially turned off of the film when I found out Get-Low was a euphemism of getting ready to die. I did not want to watch another dark hopeless film that is revered by critics for its grittiness. But when I finally watched it. I saw that this was much more than just about a man dying, but rather it was about a mans life and reasons for living it the way he did. And the film is made incredible authentic from amazing location shots complete with turn of the century cars to go with a turn of the century small mountain town still unchanged even today. But that is not all, The cast is all star acting from top to bottom. There is not a single false note in the whole thing. I mean Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek in a role tailored to her and Bill Murray in yet another unheralded but subtle and serious and yet still whimsical performance. And that is the great thing about this movie is that though it does handle big issues about what drives people choices in life and what haunts them. It does it with a grounding in both everyday reality and everyday whimsy and absurdity. There is a whole stretch of film where you are not at all sure if the story is going to go where you were told it was going to, and that makes the story itself more fun. When I think of this film I think of small films that are in my list of unheralded best movie films like "The spitfire Grill" where despite the small town, slow pace and serene and beautiful backdrop of nature, There is a whole lot of powerful living and interesting living going on. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is in the mood for a thoughtful film about life, wrong turns, redemption, and the beauty of the human heart even in tragic struggle. I thnk it might confound many a normally hip and smart 20 something as they are still in the part of life where they think they know better than to get caught by the same mistakes as the last generation and so the idea of finding hope and beauty in the ashes is of little or no interest to them. And unlike Legends of the fall there are not a gaggle of beautiful people to look at while the story is unfolding. But for the older, or the more circumspect, I think there is much to enjoy about this film. Good date movie for an established couple. In particular if you watch it at home with the time to talk about it afterwards. A very lovely example of film making telling a story that is an important one to have been told because it does such a good job of putting a certain time and a certain american soul to its plot. simply a beautiful piece of art.

This is a hauntingly beautiful tale of truth, trust, and true love. The actors did amazing jobs of bringing their characters to life. I assumed going into it that I would enjoy this movie and I was not disappointed. I wasn't expecting a huge climactic tale. It was subtle and honest and it definitely deserves to be watched!

Beautiful film. I loved Lucas Black in Sling Blade & loved him in this. Good work. Robert Duvall, I've seen all his films. He's still sexy in my eyes. I always believe the charecter he plays. I liked Bill Murray in this. Very believable & sweet. It is a movie that I will watch again.

Robert Duvall is the heart and soul of this film and he delivers in every scene he is in. Wonderful, clever script and good overall storytelling which is enjoyable and worthwhile. The rest of the outstanding cast gives beautiful performances, too. It is a rare film and deserves a rent or buy. A real gem.

... best i've seen in a long while ... murray & duvall are somewhat one dimensional often in their roles ... kudos to the director ... really brought these guys to new levels ... this movie is so well done ... a model of how a movie shold be done in every aspect ... makes you appreciate film making as a craft

This is an incredible story with incredible acting. Robert Duvall has always been exceptional but he truly nailed this role. In addition, the sets are picture perfect. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this movie as opposed to the other slop that's out there.
