Description

THE STAND is Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård), the Dark Man. THE STAND will close with a new coda written by the famed author himself.

Reviews

  • try it this way if you love the book

so I tried this approach and I found it pretty decent... I read the reviews and being an avid fan of the book I was hesitant but... knowing the story well I chose to watch episodes 2, 5 and 8 only. It was definitely the way to go for fans of the novel. I think those three episodes were a very good effort at a remake. I wouldnt dream of watching episode 9 (why bother? or the other episodes.

One of my sons subscribes to Paramount and I watched the first 2 episodes at his house. I purchased the prior version and will continue to watch that from time to time. The review site Rotten Tomatoes the critics and audience rated it much higher than I did but even there the audience rating was only 24 out of 100.
  • Just bad

Wow. This was just bad. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a tv/movie adaptation. I get "creative license," but it's like the people involved, from writers to directors to actors, never read the book before. It's not that they changed character's gender or race. That would be fine as long as the characters maintain who they are, but they changed the essense of every character in the story, as well as the general feel of both Boulder and Las Vegas. This is so far from the book or tv minseries that it should have been written as completely different series with a different title. Don't waste your time or money on this travesty.

The original from the early 90s had dread and fear, in this one Randall Flagg floats and looks pretty. Total failure of a remake.
