Description

In this remarkable adaptation of the well-loved classic, cunning special effects bring Jonathan Swift’s wonderful creations to life as never before in retelling this bizarre tale of an 18th-century Englishman who travels to strange lands that are strangely like home. The miniseries encompasses all four books of the famous “Travels”. It chronicles Gulliver’s visit to the tiny, bellicose land of Lilliput, and to its peaceable counterpart, Brobdingnag, land of the giants. It brings to life the less famous stories of the hilarious Laputans, and the terrifying Struldbruggs. And finally it takes Gulliver to the land of the beautiful, civilized talking horses, the Houynhnhms, with their human beasts of burden, the Yahoos. The recounting of Gulliver’s tales is artfully interwoven with the story of his struggle, upon his return to London, to prove his sanity and rescue his wife and young son from the conniving Dr. Bates, into whose clutches they have fallen during his nine year absence. Gulliver’s Travels has always had the power to engage adults and children alike, succeeding as both brilliant satire and inventive fantasy. In this production spectacular, state-of-the-art effects combined with breathtaking locations allow the story to be brought to the screen in a way which, until now, could only exist in the imaginations of readers.

Honestly, the quality of this particular miniseries is much more akin to what you get with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu originals than the typical fare of the 90’s. Great acting, and a large budget for its time meant the effects aren’t just good for the time, but this is the most faithful adaptation to date of Jonathan Swifts deft social commentary. I still cling to hope this will one day be remade with the respect it deserves :)
